Jeroen J.G. Geurts, MSc, MA, PhD, is Rector Magnificus of VU Amsterdam and professor of translational neuroscience at the same University. Before, he was head of the dept. of Anatomy & Neurosciences at Amsterdam University Medical Centers, location VUmc. He was President of the Netherlands Organisation for Health Research and Development (ZonMw) and Executive Board Member of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) between 2017 and 2022. Before that, he was Chair of the Young Academy of Royal Academy of the Arts & Sciences. He obtained a cum laude PhD in 2005 for his research on grey matter abnormalities in multiple sclerosis (MS). His field of expertise is clinical and translational neuroscience, with an emphasis on post mortem imaging. Within this field, he has focused on MS and primary neurodegenerative diseases. Geurts has also written several books for a wider audience, about neuroscience, academic life, and leadership. He is Director of Stichting Brein in Beeld, a foundation that promotes science communication and societal debate. For years, he was a regular science commentator on Radio 1 and 3FM. He was columnist for NRC Handelsblad between 2016 and 2019. He won several awards for his scientific work, among which the Ammodo-KNAW Award for his multidisciplinary MS research. In 2018, he was elected a fellow of the Royal Holland Society of Sciences and Humanities. In 2022, Jeroen Geurts was appointed to the Unesco Commission of the Netherlands.
