The construction industry is at a turning point. It consumes enormous amounts of resources and generates major waste streams. At the same time, pressure is growing to document demolition and refurbishment processes better, reduce material losses and turn sustainability into practical implementation. This is where Orange Hands begins. We are developing a Circular Construction Campus in Bogotá — local infrastructure for Urban Mining, Re-Use and the sustainable upgrading of materials from the construction sector. Our approach starts before demolition. Building components and materials often do not lose their value because they are unusable. They lose it because they are identified too late, removed incorrectly, not documented or mixed with the rest of the construction waste. Through material audits before refurbishment and demolition, we aim to identify, secure and document relevant components and material streams early, and prepare them for Re-Use or further processing. One key focus is wood: waste from different streams of the construction sector and wood production can be collected, sorted, tested and processed into high-value engineered wood materials. From this, a local system is emerging: a material yard, database, Re-Use processes, workshop, wood processing and, in the future, an Open Campus for training, knowledge transfer and local manufacturing. The question is not only: How do we recycle waste? But: How do we prevent value from becoming waste in the first place? Orange Hands is being built.
