About

From 1999-2008 I was an assistant professor at the Water Engineering & Management Group of the University of Twente - teaching BSc and MSc courses in integrated water management and decision-support. From 2008 onwards I am employed at the Flemish Institute for Technological Research (VITO) in Belgium -Unit Environmental Modelling. All projects are multi-disciplinary and share Systems Thinking, co-design and System Dynamics as tools for science-policy integration to address complex societal challenges related to climate change, land use change, and environmental management of land- and sea-based systems. My current activities are focusing on the design and coordination of large innnovation projects, fundraising, project management and team coaching, and the development and tools to translate understanding of the behavior of complex systems into practical policy recommendations.

    ▪ 2018-2022: project coordinator EU-H2020 Project COASTAL on Land-Sea Interactions. COASTAL (COllaborative lAnd Sea inTegrAtion pLatform) is a unique collaboration of 29 partners from 8 EU Member States, representing coastal and rural business entrepreneurs, administrations, and scientific experts for 6 case studies in the EU. The main objective is to improve Land-Sea Synergy by identifying problems and setting up evidence-based Business Roadmaps and Policy Guidelines, focusing on economic growth, marine spatial planning, and environmental protection, including inland water quality. This will be achieved by combining local knowledge and scientific expertise in a co-creation process based on qualitative and quantitative systems modelling. The total project budget is 5 MEUR. COASTAL receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under grant agreement No. 773782. ▪ 2008-2017: workpackage leader and main researcher EU funded research projects (FP6, FP7, InterregIV), related to decision-support, integrated modelling and component-based modelling.
