Dr. Jason Warner is a Senior Africa and Terrorism/Transnational Crime Analyst at the U.S. Army's Transformation and Training Command (T2COM) G2. Dr. Warner was, until recently, a Senior Associate in the Center for Strategic and International Studies' Africa Program and a Term Member at the Council on Foreign Relations. He also serves as an online, Adjunct Professor in the School of Public Affairs at American University and in the Department of Political Science at Penn State University. He is a specialist in geopolitical analysis, terrorism, national security, and foreign policy, especially on the African continent. Dr. Warner holds a Ph.D. in African Studies (Harvard), two M.A.s (one in Government (Harvard) and one in African Studies (Yale)), as well as a B.A. with Highest Honors in International Studies, along with a minor in French (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). Dr. Warner is the author of the book "The Islamic State in Africa" (Hurst/Oxford University Press 2022, with Ryan O'Farrell, Heni Nsaibia, Ryan Cummings), and the co-editor of the book "African Foreign Policies in International Institutions" (Palgrave-Macmillan 2018, with Timothy Shaw). He is also the co-author of a third book tentatively titled: "Dangerous By Design: The Islamic State's Global Provinces in Comparative Perspective" (Columbia University Press, with Amira Jadoon and Daniel Milton). He has published in academic journals including Security Studies, Foreign Policy Analysis, International Studies Quarterly, African Security, Small Wars and Insurgencies, The Journal of Modern African Studies, The Journal of Human Security, and CTC Sentinel, among others. He is also the co-author of three CTC reports on the demographic and operational profiles of "Boko Haram," Al-Shabaab, and AQIM's suicide bombers. His work has been cited in various international outlets, including the BBC, CNN, The Economist, The New York Times, Newsweek, and The Washington Post, among others. Between 2016 and 2022, he served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Social Sciences at the U.S. Military Academy (West Point), where he led Africa research in the Combating Terrorism Center (CTC).
I currently serve as the Research Director and a Senior Africa and Terrorism/Transnational Crime Analyst at the U.S. Army's Foreign Military Studies Office (FMSO). Part of the U.S. Army Transformation and Training and Command (T2COM)'s G2 unit, FMSO is an organization that seeks to understand foreign perspectives of the international security environment.
