Week-long surgical placement where I witnessed a patient's journey from the operating table to the care of other members of the multidisciplinary team such as nurses, healthcare assistants and physiotherapists. I also gained insight into a wide range of surgical specialties including general surgery, cardiovascular surgery, orthopaedic surgery and urology, witnessing both laparoscopic and open procedures. I shadowed a consultant anaesthesiologist, and engaged with patients being prepared in the anaesthetic room, to help take their mind away from their discomfort.
Two separate placements at GOSH - the first in Immunology, the second in SNAPS. I gained insight into paediatric care and adjustments made to suit the needs of children and infants. I witnessed the treatment of rare conditions such as Hirschsprung's disease and SCID, shadowing highly specialised doctors in their field.
Worked in a team of teaching assistants to help young children overcome difficulties in Maths and English. I adapted my teaching style based on the needs and abilities of the student, and witnessing students gaining confidence was highly encouraging.
Two-week long hybrid work experience placement - gained insight into the breadth of roles in healthcare, for example I witnessed a consultant radiologist in Interventional Radiology as well as a myeloma specialist and a lymphoma specialist in the Haematology Clinic.
One-week placement at a Day Centre engaging with clients, many of whom were suffering from dementia, and building rapport with them whilst playing games such as Scrabble. I collaborated with staff members to ensure that tasks such as serving lunch were well-coordinated.
