I serve as one of two student representatives on Global Brigades Inc.’s U.S. Board of Directors for the 2021-2023 term. See our Board members here: https://www.globalbrigades.org/about-us/team/
Served as Northeastern’s liaison to Global Brigades through regular communication with our assigned Volunteer Engagement Associate to ensure our brigades progressed as planned and also to continually build on our existing model and presence on campus. Worked to expand our chapter to include more brigades. Supported campus leaders of each brigade at Northeastern, including medical, public health and our newly formed dental chapter. Also contributed to the development of the 2021 National GB Student Leadership Conference, where I led discussions on ethical volunteering and campus chapter best practices. Participated in our 2021 Medical Telebrigade "in" Honduras.
As President of Northeastern University’s medical brigade chapter for the 2019-2020 school year, my responsibilities included coordinating with Global Brigades to manage logistics of the brigade (fundraising, supply accounting, booking flights, etc.), recruiting new brigade members, and organizing club meetings with educational Spanish/brigade preparation lessons. My executive board and I lead a team of 33 Northeastern students alongside 3 U.S. medical doctors on our 2020 Brigade to Santa Rosa de Guinope, Honduras, where our team provided treatment to more than 500 patients in 3 clinic days.
Work with Dr. Richard Wamai of Northeastern on various research and writing projects. Most recently published “What could explain the lower COVID-19 burden in Africa despite considerable circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus?” Worked on a scoping review of Kenyan literature on visceral leishmaniasis as well as a special edition article on the current global outlook of HIV/AIDS.
Assisted with ongoing research studies headed by Dr. Heather Brenhouse. The main aim of our lab is to link early life adversity (ELA) with manifestation of brain disorders in adulthood. Through translational research with rats, we use maternal separation and limited bedding paradigms to introduce early life stress and through behavioral testing, brain chemistry analysis, etc., we analyze alterations compared with controls. Contributing author on two recent publications delineating the effects of ELA on mother-infant communication, neurochemical changes, and caretaking and social behavior.
Helped teach a graduate neuroanatomy course (PT5410). I offered recitations for review as well as provide students with study resources and practice exams.
