Colours have gone from my cover photo, only shades of grey remain. The black square after my name indicates mourning... Although I am proud to have worked at the Earth Sciences Department of the Vrije Universiteit since 1990, and proud to established in the department an excellent argon geochronology laboratory, I am currently very annoyed with our Central Board and Faculty Board of the Science Faculty, now that they have resolved to discontinue our Earth Science Department. For ten consecutive years our BSc course was elected top course in the Netherlands! Several of my colleagues run reserch programmes of high international recognition. Earth Science training provides experience with the complexities of Earth Systems. Earth Scientists are essential for providing much-needed background into the occurences of critical raw materials.
