About

I am a Professor at Curtin University (balanced teaching and research). In this role I am Senior Research Fellow at St John of God Midland Public Private Hospital, the Director of the Curtin JBI Centre of Excellence, and Executive Fellow of the Curtin Academy. I hold or have held many other leadership and service roles including: Course Coordinator - Master of Nursing Practice (to July 2022), Core Member St John of God Health Care HREC (current), Deputy Chair of the Board, Ursula Frayne Catholic College (to 2019), Foundation Member (formerly Lead to 2024) of the International Consortium for Occupational Resilience (ICOR), Director of Teaching and Learning at Curtin University (to 2015 and 2019 and 2020 during COVID19), Nursing and Midwifery Research Coordinator at St John of God Subiaco Hospital (to 2016), Director of Practice Based Learning at Southern Cross University (to 2011), and Director of Clinical Placements at Southern Cross University (to 2009). I am a Registered Nurse and have been an educator within all adult education sectors throughout Australia. I have gained experience in undergraduate and post graduate coursework and higher degree by research supervision. I have national and international experience teaching both clinical and mixed methods research units to nursing, midwifery, diabetes educator and allied health students and professionals. I have taught internally and via the fully online mode, at a number of sites including Perth, Open Universities Australia and Singapore. I am skilled in delivering face-to-face lectures, seminars and tutorials, clinical content in skills labs and simulation, and use current technologies to deliver synchronous and asynchronous content via BlackBoard and other platforms. I respond to demand driven research problems through my SRF position at St John of God Midland Hospital, my ongoing collaboration with St John of God Subiaco Hospital and through ICOR, securing industry grants to explore real world problems. My PhD was in the arena of the scholarship of learning and teaching, and I continue to pursue research into higher education to inform my educational practice. I strive to contribute in meaningful ways to the national and international nursing community of practice, through reflexive and effective nursing leadership and academic excellence in teaching and research. The nexus between my leadership, teaching and research roles engages me with students, clinicians, education specialists and researchers to work collaboratively and collectively for better health outcomes for all Australians.

Apparently I'm a little quirky, funny and witty, intelligent but silly as wheel. I'll let you decide that as you read through my webpage about my journeys. In the real world, I'm a solo mum with full time care of Ms 18 (The Drummer) and Master 12 (The Piper). I currently live in Perth, WA, but that could change at any minute. I work full time in health research and education, but I work just to have a life. I've done the executive and corporate thing, as well as a lot of study and have the t-shirt to prove it. Now, I love travelling around the state, country and the world, either with my kids or solo. At home, and when I travel, I like to cycle, kayak, swim and hike. I do most of my Australian travel from my battered 80 series Landcruiser and trusty Cub camper trailer. Besides the kids, I often have a budgie and a mouse in tow too. I prefer to camp rough but I can take a caravan park if that's the only option. Occasionally we do a week of a holiday house or motel rooms but that's a real luxury. Overseas, I'll travel however I can. If it's work, it's often more upmarket than if I'm paying for it. I don't do hostels though - I don't need bed bugs, all night disturbances or shared dorms. I've recently invested in a backpack (albeit wheeled) in anticipation of this years travels. So, I'm looking for international adventure whenever I can. In these pages I share all my travels with you. Some of these involve my kids, some are solo. Some also include my friends and family. I hope you enjoy reading. All the photos are mine too, except the future adventures for obvious reason. I'd love to hear from you if you've got some ideas on places I could head. And if you're out there, maybe we can connect. Safe travels. Solo Avo.
