The German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin) is one of the leading economic research instituts in Germany. Its core mandates are applied economic research and economic policy as well as provision of research infrastructure. My position in the department International Economics included: • Collecting and analyzing all sorts of data with statistical software (Stata, R) • Design and supervision of all stages of a randomized controlled trial (RCT), evaluating the impact of a financial education training in Uganda with >2,000 participating micro-entrepreneurs • Designing and implementing online survey experiments about debt decisions with 1,500 U.S. residents and >2,000 German residents • Planning and managing a lab experiment >200 participants in Germany • Managing a total research budget of about 85,000 € • Writing, presenting and publishing academic articles in collaboration with others (for example, published in the peer-reviewed Journal of Development Studies) • Publishing policy articles (incl. DIW Wochenbericht, Makronom) • Communicating research findings to the general audience (via lecture, science slam, newspaper opinion statement, blog, radio interview)
Completion of mandatory courses of PhD program: advanced micro- and macroeconomics, (time series) econometrics, treatment effect analysis and economic policy
Consulting the European Research Centre for Anticorruption and State-Building (ERCAS): • Revising the components of political transparency and integrity indices for more than 120 countries; recommending adjustments and carrying them out • Presenting own data visualizations, statistical tests and regression results to the team, comparing ratings over time and against other development indicators • Building the concept and dataset for an index of factual freedom of press ranking 180 countries
Worked the Office of the Chief Economist as a visiting Ph.D. candidate: • Assisted a research project on Turkish loan officers and a policy evaluation on infrastructure in Kyrgyz Republic by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) • Conducting data analysis, data quality checks and literature reviews
