About

Companies are getting on the road to net zero emissions and measure their current sustainability level. Carbon Credits are a noisy business at the moment, many ways of getting it wrong. I assist in pointing in the right direction, match business activity with relevant emission reduction technology. Getting the most impact from investments in sustainability, manage reputational risk by choosing the appropriate methods. Leveraging low emission technology rather than buying carbon offsets or create insets that impact your Scope 1, 2 or 3 emission reporting. In ESG investments many exciting developments and new initiatives are out there in the market but many are unproven and given limited capacity the projects need to be rank ordered for feasibility, environmental and economic relevance as each next phase in the project will consume more and more resources. Structuring carbon capture projects to generate carbon credits to reduce emissions is a valuable contributor to mitigate climate change, being one of the many changes and new technologies that need to be put in place. An experienced structured finance banker and risk manager arranged financing and risk transfer for many asset classes over the years. I have developed a keen insight in where an economically feasible common ground could be found. Structured finance has a number of conflicting interests and stakeholders that need to be brought together in a place and at a price that works for all parties. Also sufficient trust needs to be established that parties to the agreement have confidence that each party will perform its contracted obligations, usually by engaging external parties that verify such performance in order to create an objective measure of such compliance. Extensive experience in Portfolio Management and Treasury related matters. Risk management (credit, liquidity, funding) and value generation can be two sides or the same coin. Adaptive structures and manage regulatory and organisation landscape changes. Engage with stakeholders across the institution to ensure operational effectiveness and deliver agreed targets. Contribute to creation of policy documentation (compliance, risk) and commentary to regulator proposals, translate high level principles in working procedures. As a Chemical Engineer by training finding solutions for complex challenges comes with the territory.

Carbon Credits markets need massive scaling up to address the climate crisis. One solution is to use Nature Based Solutions, storing carbon in the natural environment by restoring nature, capture carbon in the soil (improved agriculture processes, peat restoration etc) . I am structuring financing arrangements to bridge the gap between starting the projects and generating income from carbon credits, the capital injection needed to make changes to the landscape, plant materials and any equipment and carbon credit registration. The solution requires bringing together investors, land owners, carbon credit buyers, carbon registries and regulators.

Treasury Execution Services provides funding and capital solutions to the other busines areas of Barclays Bank PLC (Investment Bank, Corporate Bank, Retail, Barclaycard etc). Through time my mandate has migrated via Basel 1 to Basel II and now III, adding liquidity and secured funding during the crisis. More recently Treasury themes above have been added to the activities managed through the structuring mandate. Focus areas at the moment are funding, liquidity and capital management. Funding and liquidity activities include creating secured funding capacity through notes issuance, central bank windows access and bilateral investor solutions. Capital management is executed through risk reduction transactions and structures eligible for Tier 1 or 2 capital. The management of the impact of the leverage ratio is a recent addition. Also engaging with the business lines to create incentives to deliver eligible assets for liquidity purposes (central bank windows, secured funding and central clearing houses), preparing for the ring fencing regime by reducing dependency on residential mortgages for secured funding, preparation of robust recovery and resolution plans for submission to regulators. I support balance sheet advisory mandates of our client facing Structuring Teams on transaction economics, infrastructure, senior management communication and regulatory developments. I have co-authored regulatory change consultation papers on subjects related to capital management trades. Post crisis I have created solutions for legacy books to reduce impact in funding costs, capital charges and to address regulatory changes (Dodd Frank, Reg-W). In particular this involved government secured Export Finance loans (low margin, long tenor) and two private equity portfolios held by at Barclays own risk (capital intensive, prohibited matter under new regulations).
