Tacoma, Washington, United States
I am Jamie Nguyen, a senior in the Milgard School of Business at the University of Washington Tacoma. While my primary focus is on business with interests in marketing, I have developed a passion in the fields of social justice during my time at the university. I am excited to continue building my skills. I am seeking opportunities to learn, grow, and make a meaningful impact in both my academic pursuits and community involvement!
During my 10 week internship, I had the opportunity to connect with the community through the Summer Meals program, which involved preparing and handing out 1300+ meals at the Mary Bridge Health Center at the Tacoma General Hospital. I served as a site supervisor and my duties involved enhancing community engagement through activities, advertising programs, and overseeing the logistics behind the program. In addition to that, I spent some time researching the country’s top leading cause of death and injury, unintentional gun violence, to increase the initiatives at MultiCare .
As a program assistant, I act as a mentor and positive role model for Latino youth, providing guidance and support to help them develop life skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. I have had the privilege of overseeing a program, designed with a two-pronged approach. High school seniors' mentor the underclassmen while the seniors are mentored by recent or current college students. In addition, I plan and execute culturally relevant events, celebrations, and activities.
As an AVID tutor with Tacoma Public Schools, I have had the privilege of visiting classrooms twice a week to assist students with their questions and help them develop problem solving skills. I used AVID strategies and Costa level questions to initiate the beginning of student thoughts.
As a Childcare Site Lead at Midland Elementary, Custer Elementary, and Idlewild Elementary, I've led engaging activities, nurture youth, and ensure the well-being of students. I've also had the privilege of teaching during our summer school program at Four Heroes Elementary, helping children thrive academically and personally.
