My name is James Gibson and I am currently a 1st year PhD student at The Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. I am pursuing my PhD in Environmental Health, with interests in childhood lead poisoning, air pollution, and extreme heat issues.
- Applying Geographic Information System (GIS) and Python to assess access to all-season roads in rural communities for about 230 different countries and territories. - Performing data cleaning, processing, and analysis in support of the Human Planet Initiative.
- Utilized Python, MySQL, PHP, and HTML to create a website for archiving and analyzing synchrotron data from the NSLS, APS, and SSRL synchrotrons. - Utilized MySQL for data wrangling and database maintenance of about 500 data entries. - Writing a first-author publication on the development and potential applications of the website.
- Identified public spaces in Philadelphia at risk of lead contamination using GIS. - Conducted site investigations and collected 173 soil samples to characterize childhood lead exposure derived from public spaces. - Analyzed all samples by X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) in accordance with EPA method 6200. - Collaborated with various community organizations, and worked closely with regulators at the EPA.
- For my senior thesis at Vassar College, I worked under the supervision of Professor Keimowitz and Professor Sussman, in order to investigate sources of childhood lead exposure in the Hudson Valley.
- During both my sophomore and senior year at Vassar College I served as a student fellow. - Similar to the more common Resident Assistant (RA) position found at other colleges or universities, I served as a support resource for incoming freshmen.
- Conducted data analysis, lab upkeep, and various experiments for Professor Christenson in an ecology lab.
