Grenoble, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France
A lecturer at Sciences Po Grenoble in France, I have been an educator for the past 40 years, both in France and the United States. I began my career in French studies, then switched to American Studies when I moved to France at the age of 26. Shortly after my arrival in France, a colleague lent me her camera, and over the ensuing five years or so I began taking pictures occasionally. I then became more serious about photography in 1995 when I began a multi-year project on Paris at the end of the second millenium (soon to be posted on my website under the title "Paris 95-00"). Many other projects will be posted in the coming months. They are varied in nature but all have a common thread, which is to bear witness to, comment on and critique the world in which we all try to make our way. I call my works "documentary fotofictions" as they document their subjects and tell stories at the same time. They are infused with much of what I have learned as a teacher and citizen of the world as well as an artist. I now consider myself an educator and artist. I find that the two activities complement each other well. I love the contact with students in the classroom, and their youth and enthusiasm motivates me to remain actively engaged as I age. They are my source of renewable energy!
