Dr. Jamal Shillingford is a minimally invasive degenerative, robotic, and complex deformity spine specialist. After graduating from Johns Hopkins University with the highest distinction in Chemistry and classical piano, he began a decade-long tenure in New York City where he attended the Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) for his medical education. He continued to excel academically and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society as a junior (top 2% of medical students in the world). In addition, he received the prestigious John F. Bohmfalk Scholarship and the Virgin Islands Medical Institute Scholarship in recognition of his scholarly achievements. He graduated in the top 2% of his medical school class and formally received his medical degree from Columbia University. Dr. Shillingford then completed an Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the Columbia University New York Presbyterian Hospital where he served as the chief spine resident. As a member of the World Spine Outreach Program, in association with the Butterfly Foundation, he took an active role in providing advanced pediatric spinal surgical care and teaching to underserved areas around the world. Dr. Shillingford completed an orthopedic and neurosurgical spine surgery fellowship at the Norton Leatherman Spine Center in Louisville, Kentucky, which is highly regarded as one of the most esteemed spine fellowships in the country. His training has encompassed all areas of the spine including complex cervical and thoracolumbar deformity, scoliosis, trauma, oncology, infection, cervical/lumbar degenerative spine conditions, and motion preservation surgery in addition to specific training in minimally invasive spine procedures utilizing both robotic guidance and navigation as well as lateral and oblique interbody techniques. Dr. Shillingford has managed to produce over 55 peer-reviewed manuscripts, in addition to over 25 published abstracts, 10 book chapters, and over 50 academic presentations at some of the largest and most prestigious international spine conferences including the Scoliosis Research Society (SRS), International Meeting on Advanced Spine Techniques (IMAST), Lumbar Spine Research Society (LSRS), and Cervical Spine Research Society (CSRS). He is actively involved in the peer-review process for multiple scholarly orthopedic journals and is currently a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), AOSpine North America, and North American Spine Society (NASS). He remains active in clinic research and device innovation.
