Thesis Mentor: Dr. Posy Busby > Collected wood samples, tested and executed a successful surface sterilization protocol. > Isolated and characterized cultures of bacterial and fungal endophytes in P. trichocarpa. >Identified bacterial and fungal endophytes via PCR and Sanger sequencing. > Conducted multivariable analysis on the makeup of the sample microbiomes based on the presence of disease resistance genes (to S. musiva) and wood chemistry (S/G lignin ratio). > Ran disease resistance assays to determine which combination of endophytes were most likely to outcompete or antagonize S. musiva enough to prevent significant infection of the host plant.
