Jaap van den Heuvel was born in Nieuw Lekkerland. He passed the first-year exam in Chemistry in 1977 and became a MD at the University of Leiden in 1984. In 1988 he obtained his MBA degree at the University of Rotterdam. In 2003 he became a Certified Public Controller at the VU University Amsterdam and in 2011 he obtained his MAC degree at the same university. In 1985 he was member of the medical team of Alarm Centrale Euro Cross. Then he worked three years as a house officer in Thoracic Surgery and Internal Medicine. After that he became IT consultant specialized in electronic medical records. In 1992 he became management consultant at Bakkenist and worked as interim manager in the radiology department of the academic hospital in Utrecht. During the same period he was the general manager of the nursing home Amstelhof in Amsterdam. In 1997 he started as general director of the Red Cross hospital in Beverwijk. In this hospital he introduced an ISO 9001 quality management system and Six Sigma. In 2005 he became CEO of the Canisius-Wilhelmina hospital. In 2007 he obtained a PhD on the subject Quality Management in Healthcare. From 2008 until 2016 he was CEO of the Reinier de Graaf hospital. In Delft he was responsible for building a new highly efficient hospital and the introduction of Lean. In 2016 he became CEO of the Red Cross Hospital in Beverwijk and member of the board of directors of Zorg van de Zaak. In 2017 he became professor in Healthcare Management at the University of Amsterdam. Since 2020 he is an independent interim manager and consultant. He worked as interim CFO in the Antonie van Leeuwenhoek Hospital Amsterdam and the Maasstad Hospital in Rotterdam.
