Als onafhankelijk onderzoeker werk ik op het snijvlak van politieke filosofie, geschiedenis en recht. Ik ontwar zin en onzin in denkprocessen en richt mij op het doorbreken van de exculpatiereflex: de hardnekkige neiging in politiek, media en cultuur om automatisch verantwoordelijkheid af te schuiven in plaats van rekenschap af te leggen. Academisch fundament & onderzoek: Promotieonderzoek (Universiteit Leiden) naar de Nietzsche-receptie in nazi-Duitsland, de feiten en de naoorlogse interpretatie daarvan. Auteur van de handelseditie 'Nietzsches weerklank in nazi-Duitsland' (Uitgeverij Aspekt). Fundamenteel voor mijn wetenschappelijk werk is het uitgangspunt dat filosofische abstracties niet doorgrond kunnen worden zonder de concrete wijze waarop ze zich historisch in de sociale werkelijkheid manifesteren. Maatschappelijke ervaring & expertise: Naast mijn academische basis breng ik een veelzijdige achtergrond mee vanuit media, politiek en mensenrechten, opgedaan bij onder andere de VPRO, Amnesty International, de PvdA en intercultureel in de reiswereld. Summary dissertation Nietzsche's Resonance in Nazi Germany If Nietzsche's contemporary popularity implies that his political values inadvertently creep in, then it is relevant to trace his revaluation historically: to provide insight into the problematic sides of his ideas. Problem avoidance can solve problems about current events or within eternity, as inventions of the mind; yet, this is not the case when reflecting responsibly on historical events that lie behind us. After all, inspiration from Nietzsche has a daunting parallel in history. His 'influence' in Nazi Germany has never been systematically investigated in terms of a scientific understanding—one that bridges the gap between philological debates over textual forgeries and the political reality of his reception. Attempting to reclaim Nietzsche, post-war interpreters excise those implications of meaning in his texts that served as a breeding ground for Nazi ideology. Nietzsche's visions of a new dawn seemed at first glance to lack any real connection with political reality. They did, however, offer the space for it. Although his ideas were not very concrete, precisely because of this, they were able to make the elite, in a politicizing environment, receptive to a National Socialist worldview. The question was first, which passages in Nietzsche's work the Nazis referred to, and second, how his actual impact was interpreted by others. To establish whether the assertions are justified an account is given of the main interpretations that, from different perspectives, relate Nietzsche to Nazism. While thoughts are a disposition to act, necessity in causality as the only possible thing is a point of philosophical discussion, which in the strict sense of the term cannot be proven in the reception history of ideas. So it is essential to distinguish between tendentious and teleological interpretation. The latter assumes an explanation with a purpose it serves, but its target does not exclude other approaches.
