Nobody teaches managers how to handle conflict. Yet the moment they lead a team, they are expected to step in, fix issues between colleagues, and keep everything running smoothly. I know what that feels like. I understand what it is like to carry the weight of being the fixer as a manager, expected to step in and resolve issues without ever being shown how. I spent over 30 years in leadership roles, and like most managers, I was never given a clear framework for handling conflict. I was expected to fix it, manage it, and move on quickly, often without anything really being resolved. But the moment that really shaped my work didn’t come from business. It came from my own life. I experienced a breakdown in a close family relationship that lasted over 10 years. Even when things came back together, nothing was ever really addressed. What a waste. Conflict isn’t rare. It’s constant. It is unavoidable and inevitable. A natural defence mechanism that has helped us survive. But in today’s workplaces, that same response can escalate situations rather than resolve them. Once I stopped seeing conflict as something wholly negative, I developed a different relationship with it. And that shift matters. Today, I work with organisations and leadership teams to help managers move from: Avoiding conflict or feeling responsible for fixing it for others to: guiding structured conversations so the people involved resolve it themselves I support this through: • Workplace mediation that helps resolve issues where working relationships have broken down • Leadership and conflict coaching that builds confidence in handling difficult conversations • Training coaches and leaders through the CINERGY Conflict Management Coaching, an accredited, internationally recognised approach. I am one of two accredited trainers in Ireland • Practical frameworks that help managers and teams address conflict early and constructively. If conflict is showing up in your team and you are not sure how to handle it without making things worse, I can help you put structure around those conversations. I run open programmes throughout the year, alongside in house training for organisations. I have worked with organisations across healthcare, public service and corporate environments, including senior leadership and HR teams navigating complex conflict situations. Message me if you would like to explore this further.
