What can online data tell us about the offline world? And how can we use the derived insights to improve things? In our work, we use machine learning and large amounts of social media data, satellite imagery, web search logs, and official statistics to study societal phenomena such as international migration, digital gender gaps, political polarization, or poverty. We then work with non-profit partners, such as UN agencies or NGOs, to use the insights gained to support social development. If you're interested in interdisciplinary research with social impact, or if you're at an NGO that could benefit from data analysis, feel free to connect.
With generous support from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, I'm building up a new team to work on Societal Computing at Saarland University. If you're interested in interdisciplinary data science, and working with partners in the international development and humanitarian space, please get in touch.
