Dublin, County Dublin, Ireland

About

İlhami Ünal received his B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. degrees from Yeditepe University, Istanbul, Turkey in 2002, 2005 and 2013, respectively, in Electrical and Electronics Engineering, where he worked as a research assistant between 2002-2013. He managed the Antennas and Microwave Laboratory (also as the founder of the laboratory) at Yeditepe University between 2007-2013. Since Sept. 2013, he has been working as a chief senior researcher at Millimeter and Terahertz Technologies Research Laboratories (MILTAL) at the Material Institute of TUBITAK-MRC. He won "Young Scientist Award" from 31. International Union of Radio Science General Assembly and Scientific Symposium Committee with his scientific study titled "Microwave Imaging of Breast Cancer Tumor Inside Voxel-based Breast Phantom Using Conformal Antennas”, in August 2014. Between Sept. 2014 and April 2025, he was the group/team leader&project manager of the MİLTAL laboratories. Since May 2025, he has been working as a Postdoctoral Research Scientist at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of UCD, in Dublin, Ireland. His current research interests include millimeter wave/THz imaging technologies, ultra wideband antenna and multilayered radar absorbing and radome material design, waveguides, couplers, resonators for quantum computing applications, THz scaled model RCS measurements for complex electrically large platforms, propagation and scattering of electromagnetic fields, radar-based microwave imaging of breast cancer tumor, biomedical electromagnetics, high speed data transfer via THz wireless link, electromagnetic material characterization, frequency selective surfaces, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS). He has been currently the reviewer of "IEEE Open Journal of Antennas and Propagation", "IEEE Antennas and Wireless Propagation Letters", “IEICE Transactions on Communications” and “IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking” Journals. He has been the project manager of more than 25 various projects between 2014-2025. He has got 3 Patents, 1 Book Chapter, 12 Journal Papers, 65 Scientific Conference Papers, as well as, his studies has also been cited more than 240 times by other authors in various journals.
