Utilizing my 20 years of industrial and manufacturing experience, and 10 years of safety experience, amongst other technical and soft skillsets, with a background in advanced technology startups, I am currently working as a Senior EHS Specialist in the advanced nuclear energy sector to keep people safe and managing risk while providing clean energy. My dedication to occupational safety is reflected in the execution of hazard assessments and hands-on development of programs to help keep our employees, visitors, and neighbors safe. My current efforts support the overarching goals of reducing workplace injuries and helping achieve our mission of safe, advanced, modular nuclear energy. Previously, as Chief of the ERT Department at Blue Origin, I both established and led a robust emergency management system, culminating in a state-registered Fire and transport EMS Department that was integral to achieving FAA clearance for human spaceflight. This role harnessed my command skills during high-stakes launch activities, leadership in daily planning and emergencies, business acumen in the development and sale of the programs before the company knew it was needed, and adult learning and management skills that empowered our team to excel. My commitment to safety spans industries, from aerospace to advanced nuclear reactors, always with a focus on protecting people and the environment. With "boots on the ground" experience as a machinist, integration engineer, crane and heavy equipment operator, fabricator, first responder, rural EMT, incident commander, rancher and corrections officer, I have in-depth, firsthand knowledge in areas not often found in EHS leaders. I have experience in contract work for private companies, as well state and federal governments in the safety, training, and emergency response sectors. •Help keep the staff, contractors, and visitors safe at an advanced nuclear reactor test and manufacturing site •Support site injury reduction, environmental and sustainability goals, and other initiatives including the EHS committee •Pre-work for development of site additions, such as research laboratories with a variety of chemical and physical hazards • Air sampling and monitoring program work, maintenance, calibration for hazardous substances •Develop, manage, implement, and improve programs such as rescue, fall protection, emergency response, respiratory protection, machine guarding, hazardous materials, and others •Support site emergency response/preparedness team in responding to various emergencies and/or spills •Work with staff to develop a comprehensive, quality JHA for different jobs as needed •Fielding questions from staff to help their understanding of topics such as fall protection, respiratory protection, industrial hygiene, hand others •Development and implementation of hazardous rescue procedures and policies within our test reactor enclosure, to include decontamination and medical treatment •Develop and implement safety policies and procedures to promote workplace safety •Managing hazardous waste within regulatory requirements of EPA/DOT/RCRA •Develop and deliver EHS training to affected employees, contractors, and/or visitors •Investigating incidents, determining root causes and implementing corrective actions •Monitoring workplace activities to determine compliance with safety regulations and standards •Using varied experience, as well as strong analytical and problem-solving skills to develop effective solutions for challenging situations •Interpretation of OSHA, EPA, NFPA, NIOSH, ANSI standards and regulations • Management of site industrial hygiene monitoring and equipment use
• Established, developed, and managed full human spaceflight and industrial site emergency response program at Blue Origin, culminating in a top tier, state-registered industrial EMS, Fire, Rescue department, as well as the FAA emergency response clearance for human spaceflight. • Performance and command of fire suppression, emergency medical services, rescue operations, disaster preparedness, internal and external emergency resources, and training as the Emergency Response Team Commander and EMT/Firefighter/Rescue Technician. • Serve as Emergency Response Commander for launch activities, participating in nearly 20 New Shepard flights, leading approximately 30 men and women for each launch. • Writing, review and input into Environmental, Health, & Safety policies, procedures, hazard analysis • Ensure programmatic readiness of emergency response for both nominal operations and human spaceflight. • Act as a primary COVID resource on-site, fielding questions and providing assistance daily during the pandemic. • Perform emergency drills with the site to ensure emergency preparedness. • Instruct EMS, SCBA, rope rescue and confined space rescue training. • Responsible for the establishment and accurate maintenance of records pertaining to emergency responses, inventory control, maintenance, training, and managing a 250k budget with additional hundreds of thousands in capital expenditures. • Direct and participate in the development and implementation of emergency response procedures, policies, goals, objectives, and priorities, in addition to areas such as fall protection, chemical control, and confined spaces. • Ensures tools, vehicles and apparatus, personal protective equipment, supplies are available and/or ordered and kept in working order. • Serves as an envoy for Blue Origin/ ERT through involvement in the community, organizations, Emergency Management and events, develops and maintains relationships with external resources. • Responses with USBP, USFS.
Moved to full time ERT 2019 • Respond to, direct, and mitigate emergency response activities, proficiency in several areas such as SCBA/SAR, rope and confined space rescue, wildland firefighting, vehicle extrication. and primarily providing top notch patient care in the field, on site. and in an infirmary.
