  • Au Pair at The Velema Family, Belgium
    Dec 2023 - Nov 2024 · 1 yr

Working as an au pair has taught me to adapt to and effectively work in a multicultural environment. I provide daily care for two boys aged 5 and 8, while on occasion assisting with the baby (less than one year old). Some of my key responsibilities are ensuring the well-being and safety of the children, assisting with educational activities such as improving their English, and participate in recreational activities and outings. I also manage household tasks including meal preparation, laundry and light cleaning. Skills developed: • Cultural awareness: Adapting to the Belgian lifestyle and culture while also promoting the South African culture towards my host family. • Improved my Dutch Language Skills: completed level A1 as well as improving my listening and talking skills through daily interactions. • Adaptability & Flexibility: Integrating into the host family’s lifestyle and routines. Being open and handling last-minute schedule changes seamlessly. • Problem-Solving: Addressing and resolving different conflicts that arose between the children, in a calm and effective manner. • Communication: Clearly and effectively communicate with the children as well as the parents on relevant and important information. • Time Management & Organization: Learning how to balance multiple responsibilities efficiently. • Childcare & Development: Improved understanding of children, their development stages, and promote learning through play, educational activities and routines. I strongly believe that working as an au pair teaches one many foundational skills that can be of use in any professional role. Furthermore, the experience pushed me to become more independent and self-reliant which in turn had a positive impact in my level of responsibility and awareness. My original reason for wanting to pursue this venture was to explore the cultural aspects to living life abroad, yet through the process I was able to cultivate and improve the above-mentioned skills.
