During my four-week rotation in the Pediatric Cardiology Department, both inpatient and outpatient, I was actively involved in taking patient histories, performing physical exams, presenting cases during morning rounds, and formulating treatment plans with the care team. I worked closely with fellows in the echocardiography lab, where I learned the basics of echocardiographic imaging, conducted EKGs, and assisted with cardiac stress testing. I had the opportunity to observe advanced procedures such as cardiac catheterizations and ablations for high-risk pediatric patients. In the outpatient clinic, I independently took histories, presented to the attending physician, and participated in patient and family discussions regarding diagnosis and management plans. I was involved in the management of a wide range of cardiac conditions, including hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy (HOCM), mitral valve prolapse, ventricular and atrial septal defects (VSD, ASD), heart failure, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), Wolff-Parkinson-White (WPW) syndrome, coarctation of the aorta, bicuspid aortic valve, pulmonary stenosis, dysautonomia, and others
During my three-week rotation in Outpatient General Pediatrics, I took patient histories, performed physical examinations, and managed a variety of common pediatric conditions including well-child visits, sore throat, vomiting, fever, sinusitis, acne, migraines, hand-foot-mouth disease, ADHD, and autism. I presented cases to the attending physician, collaborated on developing treatment plans, and gained experience in patient-centered care within a primary care setting. I also counseled vaccine-hesitant parents, addressing concerns with evidence-based information, and was involved in patient intake and vaccine administration during routine visits
