As the President of the 2024-2025 Pre-Medicine Club at Turner Fenton Secondary School, I’m leading an ambitious agenda aimed at empowering students passionate about pursuing careers in healthcare. This year, our club will offer a range of dynamic opportunities, including hands-on Suture Clinics, interactive Webinar Panels featuring medical professionals and students, and field trips to top universities to provide firsthand exposure to life in medicine. We're dedicated to creating an engaging and supportive environment where students can explore the field of medicine, develop practical skills, and build meaningful connections to support their future careers.
As the President of HOSA Brampton, I have always been passionate about fostering inclusivity and expanding access to HOSA for students who are eager to apply their medical skills. One of my key goals has been to break down barriers that often limit students from participating in HOSA, whether due to lack of access at their schools or exclusivity within existing clubs. With HOSA Brampton, I am proud to create an environment where every student has the opportunity to explore healthcare and develop their skills, regardless of their background or school resources. HOSA Brampton is a growing chapter that empowers student success by offering resources, mentorship, and hands-on experiences that are often out of reach for many. We focus on providing real-world applications of medical knowledge, ensuring that students are not only prepared for HOSA competitions but also for future careers in healthcare. Our chapter has made a significant impact in the community, particularly in schools where HOSA clubs are either non-existent or highly selective, leaving many talented and passionate students without an avenue to pursue their interests.
As a Front Desk Receptionist at a diagnostic clinic specializing in X-ray, ultrasound, mammography, and vascular modalities, I played a crucial role in ensuring the seamless operation of daily activities. My responsibilities included scheduling patients efficiently, coordinating with X-ray technologists, and radiologists, and providing a welcoming environment for all visitors. I gained hands-on experience with Velox Imaging, managing patient records, and ensuring that all imaging procedures were scheduled and documented accurately. This role honed my communication skills as I regularly liaised between patients and medical professionals, ensuring that everyone was well-informed and that any concerns were addressed promptly. My interactions with radiologists and technologists sparked a deep interest in the science behind imaging modalities, inspiring me to conduct my own research on ultrasound, X-rays, CT scans, MRIs, and other diagnostic tools. I later transformed this knowledge into educational lessons, aiming to share the importance and intricacies of medical imaging with others.
I am an active member of Brampton Civic Hospital’s Volunteering team, contributing over 60 hours of dedicated service in the Main Lobby and Connections department. This position has provided me with a wealth of experience in the healthcare field, particularly through direct interaction with both healthcare staff and patients. In this role, I have gained proficiency in using Medical Information Technology to access, retrieve, and communicate critical information to patients, their families, security personnel, and healthcare workers. This technology has enabled me to facilitate seamless communication, ensuring that all parties are well-informed and that any concerns are addressed promptly. My position at the hospital's busy entrance has significantly enhanced my communication skills. I regularly interact with patients, guiding them to their appointments, addressing their concerns, and liaising with healthcare workers to ensure that operations run smoothly. These interactions have taught me the importance of clear, compassionate communication in a healthcare setting. Time management and delegation have been crucial aspects of my role, especially when managing the constant flow of activity at the hospital entrance. I’ve learned to prioritize tasks efficiently, often delegating responsibilities to ensure that patient care and hospital operations are not disrupted. This experience has sharpened my ability to work under pressure while maintaining a high standard of service. As I prepare to transition into a more clinical department, I am eager to build on the skills and knowledge I’ve gained, furthering my contribution to patient care and the healthcare industry.
I participated in the University of Toronto Medical Youth Summer Program, focusing on the Physiology Module, where I explored core concepts of human physiology through hands-on learning and academic enrichment. Throughout the program, I: • Gained practical lab experience, developing essential laboratory techniques and skills applicable to medical and health sciences. • Attended lectures and seminars led by University of Toronto faculty, researchers, and healthcare professionals from renowned Toronto hospitals, deepening my understanding of human physiology and medical research. • Engaged with peers and mentors, building meaningful connections with like-minded students and experienced medical staff. • Expanded my knowledge of physiological systems, bridging theoretical concepts with real-world clinical applications. This experience strengthened my passion for medicine, research, and healthcare while providing a strong foundation for future studies in the medical sciences.
