Proteins are at the heart of molecular biology which enable cells to differentiate, thrive and adapt in both health and disease. Understanding the intricate biology underlying the exact molecular configurations of proteins will provide insights into disease mechanisms to develop novel diagnostics and treatment strategies. The overwhelming diversity in proteins that exist in the human body present analytical and bioinformatical challenges that require novel technologies for their analysis and biological interpretation. This holds particularly true for protein glycosylation. Simple or highly complex sugar structures (glycans) that are attached to proteins are key players in protein biology that change dynamically in both genetic and acquired diseases. Deciphering the sugar code on proteins by glycoproteomics is a novel frontier in human medicine with great potential for (pre-)clinical applications. My current focus is on the development and application of glycoproteomics for disease diagnosis and to advance our understanding of glycobiology for improved patientcare.
