About

In Particle Physics I worked mainly on collider experiments at CERN (UA1, ALEPH) specializing on the physics of beauty-mesons. Besides work on lifetime measurements of these particles I made major contributions to the analysis of B0-oscillations. Furthermore I worked on the search of exotic particles. One of my major contributions to the ALEPH experiment was the construction of the silicon vertex detector, which was the decisive instrument for the successful measurements of b-lifetimes and oscillations. Later I had a central role in the design and construction of the ATLAS silicon tracker (SCT). This included the design of the basic module, the R&D of radiation hard silicon detectors, module construction and management tasks (member of the ATLAS SCT steering group, chairperson of the ATLAS ID institute board). From 2005 to 2013 I was head of the semiconductor laboratory of the MPP, leading the development of novel silicon sensors for use in future particle and x-ray detectors. The developments I focused on were DEPFET active pixel detectors to be used in the vertex detector of the Belle II experiments, thinned pixel sensors with advanced interconnection technology (3D) to read out ASICs and avalanche pixel arrays for photon counting. I organized the transition of the laboratory as joint facility of the Max Planck Institute for Physics and the Max Planck Institute for extraterrestrial Physics into a independent central facility of the Max Planck Society, Since 2013 I am head of the Belle/Belle II group of the Max-Planck-Institut für Physik Spezialgebiete: B-Physics (lifetimes, mixing, CP violation) Silicon detectors: strip and pixel sensors, active pixel sensors, 3D integration, silicon photomultipliers
