About

Interventional Pain Medicine Specialist and Clinical Scientist with a career spanning Portugal, the United States of America, Canada, and Spain. My journey began at the University of Lisbon, where I earned my Medical Degree (2014), followed by a 5-year residency program in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (2020). During this time, I became drawn to Interventional Pain Medicine, fascinated by its capacity to provide patients with targeted relief. My path took a defining turn when I joined the Department of Pain Medicine at Mayo Clinic as an Invited Clinical Research Scholar (2018; 2021), training under Dr. Mark Friedrich Hurdle. At Mayo Clinic, I contributed to refining ultrasound-guided techniques for chronic spinal pain, an experience that deepened my passion for Interventional Pain Medicine. My path progressed with a Clinical Fellowship in Chronic Pain Medicine at the University of Toronto (2022), mentored by Dr. Anuj Bhatia, Dr. Paul Tumber, and Dr. Philip Peng. As Dr. Peng’s clinical and teaching assistant, I was involved in advancing education on ultrasound-guided techniques in Pain Medicine nationally and internationally, a role that enriched my clinical expertise and inspired my passion for mentoring others. These formative experiences honed my clinical and interventional skills while strengthening my drive to mentor and support the next generation of leaders in the field. Now based in Barcelona (2023 - Present), I serve as Senior Specialist and Responsible Clinical Lead for the Education and Training Excellence Center in Pain Medicine at Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, where I am also the Director of the Clinical Fellowship Program in Interventional Pain Medicine (2024 - Present). In addition, I serve as Medical Director of Pain Medicine at Sagrat Cor University Hospital, the largest privately owned general hospital in Barcelona (2025 - Present). Throughout my career, I’ve lectured at international conferences in over 25 countries and authored 40+ peer-reviewed Q1 articles. My contributions to the specialty have been recognized with the 2018 Grant for Young Clinical Researcher of the Year in Pain Medicine (Grünenthal Foundation), the 2020 Gofeld Academic Scholarship Award, and the 2022 Nikolai Bogduk Young Investigator Grant. These honors reflect my dedication to advancing the field through research and global collaboration. My journey across four countries has intrinsically shaped my approach to clinical care, research, and mentorship, fueling my mission to improve the lives of patients suffering from chronic spine and musculoskeletal pain.
