Guido Tomme studied chemical engineering at the University of Ghent, Belgium. In 1989 he joined Bayer Antwerpen N.V., Belgium, where he worked as technical manager in the rubber chemicals and later on in the polymers production. He subsequently transferred to the engineering department where he took the assignment as project manager for the expansion of the Bisphenol A plant in Antwerpen. In 2000 he became plant manager, responsible for production and technology, for the newly to be erected Bisphenol A plant in Map Ta Phut, Thailand, where he stayed till stable operation of the plant. Tomme subsequently served as site lead for Polycarbonates in Shanghai, China where he planned & erected, started and operated a 200 kton per year polycarbonate facility with raw material production, a primary polycarbonate production as well as a compounding . In 2008 he returned to Europe to take over the global responsibility for the early phases of all Bayer Material Science (now Covestro) projects above 10 Mio€. After developing and implementing a project as project manager for the raw material and infrastructure supply around the new TDI-Production in Dormagen, he was assigned as lead of the group master planning for the polyurethanes business of Bayer, supporting the head of the business unit polyurethanes in decisions around the strategic asset alignment. In 2011 he was appointed as global head for the unit Civil, Structural & Architectural within the engineering division of Bayer Technology Services.

The unit CSA within the engineering department of Bayer Technology Services GmbH delivers competitive and attractive solutions around the life cycle of civil constructions, from engineering and construction over maintenance till demolition. The 170 employees in Germany and around 100 over the rest of the world strive to deliver prime capex investments for Bayer (1.8 to 2 billion per year) with their CSA-competence, including mechanical, electrical and plumbing.
This role supports the head of the business unit polyurethanes in all decisions around the strategic alignment of the assets. It prepares the decision for future investments/de-investments, makes proposals for cost improvement and evaluates the competitor landscape and cost structures.
As a venture manager, the main objective is to guarantee a strict adherence to the phase model for the execution of projects and to make sure that the business model remains attractive at all times.
This role describes the lead for a non-technical project to provide the raw materials, utilities and infrastructure needed for a successful startup and competitive production of a new world scale TDI-plant in Dormagen, Germany. The main task was finding the optimal solution for a complicated product network of production plants, including the negotiation of multi hundred million Euro contracts.
This is a production department with an investment of 300 Mio Euro , a headcount around 350 employees and a yearly turnover at around 500 Mio Euro. The main task consisted of erecting the 4 production units (wet side and dry side polycarbonates), the startup and the further improvement to reach a competitive world scale unit.
