Employ in R&D department for the study and application of new solution in parcel sorting systems such as electric hub motor wheels realized with synchronous electric motors with permanent magnets. This work was supervised by engineer Fabio Calegari (Elmo srl) We designed an assisted synchronous reluctance engine. For the design of the machine the Syr-e Open source type simulation software was used, which needs to run on the FEMM simulation software (for finite element analysis) and also needs the numerical analysis software Matlab. To practice using the software and to verify the reliability and accuracy of the calculations made by Syr-e, at first a Brushless IPSM reference engine was designed, dimensioned and analyzed. The best-performing permanent magnets are those containing rare earths elements however their significant price increase (due to China holding 95% of resources and export limited to a minimum) has lead manufacturers of permanent magnet machines to intensify scientific research in order to find alternative solutions. Afterwards an assisted synchronous reluctance engine was assembled by making use of ferrite magnets and the same stator of the Brushless reference engine and with performance comparable to the latter. Finally, comparisons were made between the Brushless and the reluctance engine by analysing performance and cost of production. The comparison of the total costs for the purchase of the materials required for the assisted reluctance engine resulted is a saving of 74% compared to the costs for the reference Brushless engine.
