Dr. German Velez, MD, is a second-year Fellow in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at NewYork-Presbyterian (Columbia/Cornell). Originally from Colombia, he completed medical school in Bogotá and trained in adult psychiatry at Boston University/Boston Medical Center. During his training, he secured two research grants exploring cultural factors influencing children's resilience and implicit bias among mental health providers. Dr. Velez has contributed to numerous toolkits and guides. He authored the American Psychiatric Association Resource Document addressing Social Determinants of Mental Health in Children and Adolescents. He has also made multiple appearances in international news outlets such as Univision and Telemundo. He previously served as chair of the American Psychiatric Association Foundation's Public Psychiatry Fellowship, and was the Resident-Fellow Member Trustee on the American Psychiatric Association's Board of Trustees. His professional interests include cultural psychiatry, systems of care, qualitative and participatory research, early childhood mental health, and upstream approaches to mental health promotion and prevention.
