About

Understanding how building structures work and how can be repaired, retrofitted and strengthened to be safely reused have been the focus of my professional and educational career. My education comprises a Bachelor Degree in Building Engineering, a Master of Science Degree in Preservation of existing buildings and intervention techniques, and an international PhD, awarded Cum Laude, which investigates the development of structural analysis and design of buildings. I have over twelve years of experience in the fields of structural and building engineering: four years as site engineer for an international construction company, where I specialized in concrete and steel structures; two years as structural engineer in a steel erector company; and for the last six years I have worked as structural engineer specialized in interventions and retrofitting of existing buildings. For the last years I have also researched independently in the areas of structural analysis and preservation engineering achieving a PhD and publishing several scientific articles.

Experience

  • Structural Engineer Consultant at Old Structures Europe
    Jan 2024 - Present · 2 yrs 7 mos

  • Preservation & Structural Engineer / Project Manager at Old Structures Engineering
    Mar 2011 - Dec 2023 · 12 yrs 10 mos

In Old Structures I have been responsible for over 50 intervention projects. The projects ranged from adaptive reuse of existing buildings, retrofitting to comply with current codes, and design of new additions and buildings. I have efficiently managed a team of engineers to deliver the project on time, quality and budget. Other important part of my duties has been the direct contact with clients, architects, mechanical engineers, subcontractors, etc. to efficiently coordinate the project and scope of work. The main duties have been: - Responsible of structural retrofitting projects. - Structural assessment and analysis of existing buildings using linear/nonlinear analysis and FEM software. - Seismic analysis of existing buildings. - Develop structural calculations, analysis, and design of new structures and reinforcements in a variety of structural systems and materials (steel, concrete, timber, metals and masonry). - Developing comprehensive project plans, technical reports and calculations to be shared with clients as well as other staff members. - Managing engineers by delegating project tasks based on staff members’ strengths, skills and experience levels. - Review and validation of novel engineers work.

  • Postdoctoral Researcher at Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft
    Jan 2019 - Jan 2022 · 3 yrs 1 mo

    - Researcher for the European project CONSECH20: dealing with intervention and restoration of historic concrete buildings. - Researcher for the European project Green Quays. - Lecturer in different Master courses.

  • Project Manager / Structural Engineer at Coime
    Mar 2009 - Feb 2011 · 2 yrs

I was responsible for the execution of steel building projects from the bid phase to the final installation of the structure. The nature of my duties involved an initial assessment of the structure to evaluate time and cost of the project. Once the project was awarded, I reviewed the design drawings and specifications to foresee any issues, and to propose any changes to optimize the structure. My main duties were: - Project management of steel structure constructions. - Review the design drawings, calculations, and specifications to foresee any issues and propose structural changes to implement and optimize the structure. - Design steel connections and other members of the structure. - Draft precise computerized shop drawings for fabrication and erection using AutoCAD 2D/3D, and Tekla Structures. - Supervise the fabrication process in the shop and the erection process in the field.

  • Site Engineer and Head of the Structural Engineering Department at Ferrovial
    Jun 2004 - Dec 2008 · 4 yrs 7 mos

In Ferrovial I worked in four challenging structural projects. The projects comprised residential, civil and office buildings, with different types of structural systems: cast-in-place concrete structures, precast concrete and steel framing. My main duties were: - Responsible for coordinating and supervising the engineering department for the optimization of the building structural design. - Study of the project from a technical and strategical standpoint to develop and monitor the construction planning, cost, time and quality. - Coordinate, supervise and manage all phases of the construction process. Technical supervising of on-site job. - Efficiently coordinate and communicate with subcontractors, engineers under my department, and other stakeholders.
