About

Experience in power electronics design on the medium high power range: I partecipated to the development of 9MW power converter for motor application based on the 3level structure. I partecipated to the development of a 12 MW converter based on the 9MW but with RCD snubber to improve commutation. I lead the development of a 500kW UPS with cosfi=1 buck converter and standard 2level 3 phase inverter. Experience of control design (standard PI and RST, State control) applied to the control of DCDC-ACDC-DCAC converters. State controller applied to the control of a 3 phase buck converter with undumped LC filter. RST converter applied to the control of the DCDC converter. Experience in the dimensioning of cooling systems for power electronics (air and liquid heatsink) and thermal management in general: Liquid coldplates for presspack components (IGCTs). Air cooled heatsink optimisation for plastic IGBTs both with analitical formulae and CFD simulations. Main goal: lead an R&D tem in power electronics company. Other golas: continue development in R&D power electronics.

Experience

  • Power electronics engineer at CERN
    May 2009 - Present · 17 yrs 2 mos

Development and operation of High Power and Medium power converters for the supply of accelerators magnets. Specification of the power part and design of control laws.

  • Power electronics R&D Engineeer at GE digital Energy
    May 2006 - May 2009 · 3 yrs 1 mo

Power Electronics engineer, responsable of the design of new UPS on a project basis. My activities include: Thermal-electric dimensioning of IGBT based inverters-rectifiers. Simulation and implementation of control strategies for inverters-rectifiers CFD (Icepak) and electromagnetic (Maxwel) FEM simulations expertise.

  • Power electronics Engineer at AsiRobicon
    Dec 2001 - Apr 2006 · 4 yrs 5 mos

Power Electronics Designer of electrical converters in ASIRobicon (Multinational company 1200 employee in Italy. Develop and build Medium Voltage Drives worldwide). In this company I was member of the R&D team that developed Drives (both the power electronics and the motors) in the medium voltage range with power of 10MW to 40MW. With this company I partecipated to the development of a 3 level converter based on IGCT components following in particular the power dimensioning of the drive. I also gained experience in the liquid cooling system normally used in this kind of drives. Due to the high power of the installations a complementary experience in the transformers, circuit breakers and motors was also required expecially during the commisioning phase on the plant.

  • R&D Engineer at ABB ricerca
    Sep 1998 - Dec 2001 · 3 yrs 4 mos

Electromechanical Researcher by the ABB Research Center in Sesto S. Giovanni (Italy). Here my experience was oriented at the use of FEM software (electromagnetic) as aid to the development of Electrical motors, High voltage equipments and electromechanical devices. In this role I partecipated to the realisation of a compact SF6 insulated substation with the italian ABB company “ABB ADDA”; to the development of a magnetic actuator for a vacuum actuator (ABB Sace)...
