Services offered range from large multi-megawatt facilities for cloud, social media and financial services customers to colocation and interconnection services at key metro hubs. Conducted competitive benchmarking study and analyzed cost structure of a number of different electrical and mechanical designs. Responsible for BMS and branch circuit monitoring strategy and direction with an emphasis on automation and improvements in operational efficiency across the portfolio. Also due diligence in support of new and potential acquisitions.
Devonshire Investors, the private equity arm of Fidelity Investments, owned investments in the Information and Communications Technology arena - Colt in the UK / Europe, and KVH in Japan / Asia Pacific. The Global CTO responsibilities included: (1) working with Colt and KVH on co-ordinated product and technology roadmaps; (2) evolution of network architecture, data center and colocation services, and managed services and cloud computing offerings; (3) technical leadership for key projects such as the new Tokyo Data Center and follow-on projects in Japan, Asia, Europe and the US; (4) helping US sales and business development with key customers.
Qwest Hosting and Colocation Services were delivered via 16 data centers around the US. Organization consisted of 250 engineering & operations staff serving over 1100 customers ranging in size from small managed service customers to large colocation customers with 1000's of cabinets across multiple sites. Key accomplishments were building out several new data centers and expanding existing ones to meet growing demand. Also focused on managing power and cooling infrastructure to meet the increasingly challenging demands of customers as they deployed higher and higher density server infrastructure. On the managed services front, offered storage services, backup and recovery, operating system, virtualization, database administration, monitoring and security services. Grew the business above target for five years in a row.
Qwest IT infrastructure consisted of over 1000 applications running on 8 mainframes, several thousand servers, and petabytes of storage deployed in 3 large and 10 smaller data centers connected together with a national WAN network. Organization was over 1200 people - half were Qwest and the other half moved to IBM as part of a 10 year, $2B outsourcing contract. Key responsibilties and accomplishments were data center consolidation, server consolidation, mainframe CPU reduction, storage tiering and refresh, server virtualization, and WAN rationalization. Managed all web services, security operations, directory, email, remote access, call center infrastructure, help desk, desktop and internal networking. Managed all service delivery and SLA's for all IT operations.
Built organization focused on International Engineering & Operations at Qwest. Via the KPNQwest JV, extended broadband infrastructure across the Atlantic via several undersea cables and rolled out a complete set of connectivity products in Europe. In AsiaPac, after several attempts at forging a JV deal, went ahead and built the Qwest Asia network. Activated capacity on major new undersea cable systems, and built out PoP's in Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney. Launched private line, ATM, IP and VPN services and implemented voice interconnects with several carriers. In US, built out Qwest dial access network which provided a 1.2 million port national footprint for major ISP's like AOL and Microsoft.
Iridium developed the first global low-earth-orbit satellite communications system consisting of 66 satellites, 15 earth stations, and a central NOC. Based on GSM wireless standards, it was a major network and systems integration challenge and its global scope and multiple partners made this a unique project. I led the team responsible for engineering and operations efforts to bring up first service in Nov 1998. After service launch responsibility shifted to monitoring network performance and maintaining service quality. Also took on applications engineering in support of data services and key vertical markets like maritime and aeronautical.
