Heat shaped the last industrial architecture. Programmable energy, Physical AI and trusted autonomous decision systems may help shape the next. My work focuses on how industry moves from applying energy as bulk heat to controlling how energy acts on matter — selectively and adaptively, with intelligence that compounds across every deployment. This is critical because much of the physical economy — materials, manufacturing, resource recovery, industrial processing — still operates with limited intelligence at the point where energy interacts with matter. Yet that is where industrial value is created and where most of the hard problems in decarbonisation, circularity, resource recovery and food processing actually live. I believe the next frontier in industrial transformation will emerge at the intersection of three things: 1. Programmable Energy — shifting from heat delivery to selective energy disposition control 2. Process Intelligence and Physical AI — adaptive systems that learn from every deployment and compound knowledge across a network of reactors 3. Trust Infrastructure — the foundational governance layer that makes autonomous industrial decision-making verifiable, auditable and deployable at scale At Microwave Solutions, this informs our work in programmable energy systems for transforming matter — from molecular recycling, to mineral liberation and food safety and pathogen inactivation.
