I was working as a part of the Energy and Environmental Engineering research group at the University of Oulu. Our research group worked on a project called FREED (Funding Resources for Energy Enterprise Management) as a part of which I did my master’s thesis. The main aim of the project was to make it possible for innovative energy start-ups to succeed in Northern Europe, where many factors can make growth problematic. My part on the project was to do a preliminary mapping on the energy issues in Northern regions, map the energy innovations in the market at the moment and to assess the potential of these innovations. I also made some project related videos. The empirical part of my thesis was about mapping and improving the energy use at the University of Oulu and as an improvement plan I made designs for two different solar panel systems for the university campus. The designs included economic assessments, which I used when promoting the systems to important stakeholders.
My daily routines included helping the employees of the HSE department in their projects although I mostly concentrated on the energy and environmental aspects. I also had some long term projects that I worked along the whole summer. These were updates to different environmental assessments. My tasks also included an update to an emission monitoring plan, calculation of fixed costs and investments, preparation of different statistics and preparation of background material for an internal workshop held in Porvoo.
This was my second summer at the Outokumpu steel foundry. I worked at the end of the steel foundry process line where the final composition of the product was refined.
