I am the Senior Laboratory Manager for the Division of Surgery and Interventional Science at the University College London (UCL) where I lead a team of 7 highly specialised technical team across 3 sites. I lead on the professional management of research facilities such as electron and confocal microscopy through to workshop facilities such as laser cutters and 3D printers. I have a PhD in Neurology from UCL and over 10 years of experience in laboratory management, export controls compliance, and regulatory compliance in higher education. My passion is to create enabling environments for academic excellence and innovation, while ensuring the Division operates within the compliance requirements of the law and University regulations. I am skilled in developing and implementing policies and processes, providing advice and guidance, and delivering training and support in the areas of laboratory management, safety, information governance, and export controls. I lead and develop a team of 7 high performing technical staff across 3 satellite sites, 2 of which operate within NHS Trust sites. I lead on the professional management of research facilities such as electron and confocal microscopy through to workshop facilities such as laser cutters and 3D printers.
Involved in all stages of pre-opening, soft launch and opening of a new hotel. To act as Duty Manager for the shift for a hotel with 70 rooms, 2 meeting rooms, 2 restaurants, 2 bar in a city centre location. To manage night team to ensure standards are met. To check guests in and manage their needs by providing excellent customer service. Cash up and run end of day on the bar as well as running the night audit, after sorting out any discrepancies. Compile relevant night reports for the accounts department. Complete the billing before guests check out. Serve a reduced night menu. Conduct two floor walks per shift, First Aid trained, respond to any critical building issues and manage guest experience.
- I am responsible for leading and managing matters relating to risk and compliance and health and safety across the School, acting as School Safety Adviser, and Information Governance Guardian to ensure the School is operating within the compliance requirements of the law and University regulations. - I am responsible for managing processes to develop, allocate and monitor the School’s space, office equipment, learning and technical resources. - This strategic role requires me to work independently and lead on policy and process development in these areas. - I support the Head of School and Head of School Operations in the development and management of School strategy and policy in the areas of risk and compliance including information governance and health and safety. - I provide support for and advise on the development, implementation and monitoring of the School’s Health and Safety Policy, and lead on agenda setting and management of the School’s committees and groups relating to this area of work. - I develop and maintain plans to ensure efficient and effective management of compliance and risk throughout the School. - I provide assurance to the Head of School and Head of School Operations regarding local compliance with the Information Governance Policy and associated procedures as well as being accountable to the University’s Data Protection Officer. - I disseminate guidance, manage local security incidents, and identify circumstances where data sharing agreements are needed. - I advise on, and oversee all risk assessments for the School including its Institutes and communicate and liaise with academic and professional services (PS) staff. - I lead on the preparation and management of any governmental or university audits, inspections and related work and projects in the School (in particular the HASMAP project and implementation of GDPR requirements) working with internal and external stakeholders.

I developed and managed systems for the assurance of compliance with the requirements of export controls, particularly in relation to UK export regulations but also the USA (Export Administration Regulations and International Traffic in Arms Regulations). I acted as the single point of contact for advice on compliance with export controls, for advice on classification of goods and technology. I contributed to the development, provision and delivery of training and training material with respect to export controls. I provided support in obtaining UK export licenses, including Standard Individual Export Licences (SIELs) and Open Individual Export Licences (OIELs) for both Dual Use and Military Goods. I ensured the correct use of Open General Export Licences (OGELs) and apply for Control List Classifications. This involved identifying the correct documentation, liaising directly with researchers and their external collaborators and submitting the application through SPIRE, the Export Control Organisation’s online export licensing system. I provided support in obtaining US export authorisations and re-export licence applications from the US Department of Commerce. I conducted visitor and Denied Party Screening (DPS) transactions and supported the review of potential questions. I assisted with HMRC and Export Control Joint Unit (ECJU) audits.
