About

I work at the intersection of comparative education, policy, innovation, and system transformation. My research and practice focus on how education systems can prepare children and youth to thrive in the 21st century and help build more just, inclusive, sustainable, and democratic societies. I have studied and designed initiatives in global citizenship, civic education, entrepreneurship education, climate change education, and artificial intelligence in education, with a particular interest in how these agendas can expand opportunity and relevance for all learners. At Harvard, I lead the Global Education Innovation Initiative, a cross-national partnership connecting research, policy, and practice to examine how nations define and support the development of the competencies young people need for the future. I work with governments, international organizations, foundations, universities, and schools to help translate ideas into educational improvement at scale. I am passionate about making education institutions more relevant to the world’s most urgent challenges and opportunities, including the Sustainable Development Goals. I believe universities can be powerful partners in improving K-12 education and in strengthening the communities they serve. I’m especially interested in collaborations that bring together diverse institutions, disciplines, and sectors to generate new ideas and practical solutions for complex educational challenges. I advise universities, schools and networks of schools, governments, international organizations, foundations, private groups, and other educational institutions on strategic education issues.

At Harvard, I have helped build one of the leading platforms for comparative and international education by creating and leading programs that have prepared thousands of graduates for leadership roles in governments, universities, international organizations, foundations, and civil society around the world. I teach more than 100 students each year through practice-based courses in comparative education policy, and educational innovation, helping emerging leaders translate research into policy and systems change. I founded and direct the Global Education Innovation Initiative, a cross-national research and practice collaborative that has advanced knowledge on how education systems can promote equity, global citizenship, teacher development, sustainability, and resilience. This work has informed policymakers, educators, and institutions across more than 30 countries. My research and collaborative publications have shaped global conversations on educational improvement, including curriculum reform, teacher preparation, pandemic recovery, climate change, and artificial intelligence in education. Recent open-access books from this work have been downloaded more than one million times. Across Harvard and partner institutions worldwide, I have helped connect scholarship, policy, and practice to support system-level transformation and to position education as a force for inclusion, democracy, and sustainable development.
