About

Fabiano Lemes de Oliveira is an Associate Professor in Urbanism at the Department of Architecture and Urban Studies (DAStU) at Politecnico di Milano, Italy. His areas of expertise include nature-based solutions, green urbanism, sustainable and resilient cities and planning models aimed at balancing urbanisation with nature. He is the author of Green Wedge Urbanism: History, Theory and Contemporary Practice (2017) and co-editor of the books Nature-based solutions for sustainable urban planning (2022), Re-imagining Resilient Productive Landscapes (2022) and Planning Cities with Nature: Theories, Strategies and Methods (2019). He is the Principal Investigator of the project ‘NBSouth_ Nature-Based Solutions via retrofitting for Climate Adaptation’ and was the principal investigator of the projects ‘Re-naturing Cities’ and ‘The Environment-Culture-Technology Nexus: Envisioning Future Green Cities’. He has been commissioned as an Expert Reviewer for the European Commission Horizon Europe Progamme and the Horizon 2020 Research Programme on nature-based solutions and sustainable urbanisation. He was also an Expert Reviewer for the New European Bauhaus Prizes 2023. He has edited a Special Issue of the journal Futures, titled ‘Futures of Human-Nature Relationships in Urban Planning, Design, and Practice’. He teaches urban and environmental planning and design in the Masters of Sustainable Architecture and Landscape Design and in the Masters of Architecture and Urbanism. He is also an active PhD supervisor and is on the Board of Professors of the PhD programme in Urban Planning, Design and Policy. Previously he worked as a Reader in Urbanism and Architecture at the University of Portsmouth, UK. Some of his main roles included being the Research Leader at Portsmouth School of Architecture, the REF Coordinator for Architecture, Built Environment and Planning, and the coordinator of the Masters in Sustainable Cities.
