They have a foundation problem dressed up as a marketing problem. The founder can't explain what the company does in under two minutes. The website says one thing, the sales deck says another, and the last agency spent six months optimizing a funnel built on messaging nobody validated. Sound familiar? I've spent 15 years in marketing, almost all of it inside founder-led companies with small teams, tight budgets, and no senior marketer in the building. I started building online communities and digital events at seven years old, and subsequently crashing the servers of online multiplayer video games unintentionally. By 15, I'd built a gaming community website with 200,000+ active monthly visitors using my allowance money. I've been paid to do this work since I was 16. What I've learned across every engagement is that the same failure mode shows up in three different costumes. Lead-gen tunnel vision collapses everything upstream of the funnel. Consultant-speak replaces actual thinking with abstraction. Bad context transmission means the founder's thesis never reaches the people executing on it. Same disease, three costumes. Same fix all three times: slow down, do the foundation, and stop performing work instead of doing it.
