I am currently the Payroll Clerk in the Finance Department at the City of Kentwood. I have my Bachelors of Science Degree in Business with a Human Resources Management emphasis from the University of Phoenix.
* Process payroll, collecting and reviewing employee time and attendance data, and calculating wages, overtime, and other forms of compensation. * Manage payroll deductions and withholdings for federal and state taxes, Social Security, Medicare, retirement contributions, insurance premiums, and other authorized deductions. * Maintain accurate employee payroll records, including new hires, transfers, resignations, changes in pay rates, exemptions, and benefit enrollments. * Issue paychecks and manage direct deposit transfers, providing employees with statements of earnings and deductions. * Generate comprehensive payroll reports for internal management and external entities (e.g., IRS, state tax authorities, MISDU, retirement systems), including summaries of earnings, taxes, deductions, and leave balances. * Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local payroll laws, tax regulations, and city policies, including those related to minimum wage, overtime, tax withholding, and garnishments. * Address employee and management inquiries regarding payroll questions, discrepancies, and issues related to pay, benefits, and tax matters. * Reconcile payroll accounts, including bank statements, to ensure accuracy and identify any discrepancies. * Collaborate with Human Resources (HR) on employee onboarding and offboarding, benefit enrollments, and resolution of payroll-related issues.
Maintain electronic timecard and databases for 700+ staff and participants. Compile and total payroll data. Ensure accuracy of pay through paper checks, direct deposit, and pay cards. Manage pay card system. Train payroll backups and ensure accuracy of payroll. Manage the process of new employee paperwork. Maintain and update employee history files, including all PTO accrual data. Generate and distribute weekly/monthly/requested payroll reports. Report and verify payroll data for submission to governmental entities as required. Responsible for ensuring correct W-2s are distributed to all staff, participants, and govering entities. Ensure accuracy and proper distribution of garnishments and other mandated deductions. Audit monthly benefit bills for accuracy. Ensure accurate and timely completion of employee closes in payroll database.
Answered multi line phone system with up to 20 lines. Greet and direct customers and visitors. Updated phone system settings as needed (greetings, directory, phone tabs). Typed quotes, letters, and memos for 10 sales staff. Received service calls and input electronic work orders. Sorted, opened and distrusted mail to proper staff members. Created purchase orders when necessary. Performed general office duties such as faxing, filing, coping, and light cleaning.
