After the realization that I was not destined to be an astronaut (needed glasses), I managed space systems projects, then grew alternative energy and UAV businesses and markets. It was within these incredibly fulfilling years of service that I developed my management skills that led me to executive leadership. Managing Merit Badge Program for Fremont District: organizing/conducting Merit Badge College for 5 years, selecting adult Counselors, advising and training Scouts. District Leadership Committee member: delivering the Crater Lake Council scouting program to the District: raising funds, managing resources and advising District Executive. Development of boys and girls Troops: Leading the Troop Committee for 8 years, obtained permissions for starting the first Girls Troop in the Crater Lake Council, serving as Assistant Scoutmaster.
• Worked with Federal defense authorizers & appropriators to develop supplemental funding and supporting policy language for two critical military combat initiatives. • Executed a U.S. DOE ARPA-E project based on developing a revolutionary technology for industrial scale cooling. Established a Technology-to-Market strategy/plan for coordination with early adopters and next-stage funders. Managed project risk management component.
• Created unmanned aerial systems (UAS … aka 'drone' aviation) programs with Oregon state agencies and strategic commercial interests. Focused on public benefit projects, including UAS operations for wildland fires, natural resources and emergency response, and commercial forestry initiatives. • Develop strategic plan for implementing UAS for wildland firefighting with Oregon Dept. of Forestry.
• Co-led industry effort for developing Oregon and Washington UAS legislation. Successful with HB 2710. • Oregon lead for the team implementing the benchmark first of its kind Pan-Pacific UAS Test Site at Tillamook. My team led the research leading to integrating UAS into the National Airspace System. • Teamed with Orbital Sciences Corporation to pursue NASA National Balloon Program; won $125 M NASA's National Balloon Program. Teamed with Boeing to pursue and capture $23 M NASA Commercial Crew Transportation System balloon-assisted drop test program.
