Prof. dr. Eric De Brabandere holds the chair of International Dispute Settlement at Leiden University’s Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies. He is also a Member of the Brussels Bar practicing international law and arbitration as a partner in De Meulemeester & De Brabandere (DMDB Law) and a member of the Board of Editors of the Revue belge de droit international. He was Director/Head of Department of the Grotius Centre for International Legal Studies at Leiden Law School from Seprember 2017 until August 2024, and co-Editor-in-chief of the Leiden Journal of International Law from 2013 until 2022. His areas of expertise are international dispute settlement, investment law and arbitration, and general international law. He is the author of several publications in these fields, including the books 'Merrill's International Dispute Settlement' (7th Edition) (with the late Prof. John Merrills) (CUP 2022) and 'Investment treaty arbitration as public international law' (CUP 2015). At Leiden University, Eric De Brabandere teaches various courses on International Dispute Settlement in the Advanced Master Program in International Dispute Settlement and Arbitration, which he also directs. Eric De Brabandere’s practice as partner with DMDB Law focuses on serving as arbitrator. He has been appointed as presiding arbitrator, sole arbitrator, and co-arbitrator in international commercial arbitrations both ad hoc and institutional. He regularly acts as expert in international proceedings, and advises on international commercial arbitration, investment law and arbitration, and international dispute settlement. He has previously acted as counsel in investment treaty arbitrations under the ICSID Convention and the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules. He is listed as arbitrator suitable for appointment in bilateral disputes under the EU’s trade agreements with third countries (established by EC Decision C(2020) 8905, is listed as arbitrator with the Netherlands Arbitration Institute (NAI) and is a member of the Belgian Centre for Arbitration (CEPANI). He was awarded the ‘Serge Lazareff Prize - Legal Services’ by the SHAPE/NATO Allied Command Operations (ACO) Office of Legal Affairs (OLA) in 2021.
