MNA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit environmental organization founded to preserve, sustain, and restore valuable coral reef ecosystems in Hawai`i. During this position I primarily trained and led staff during in-water data collection via SCUBA using KAHU survey methods by the Division of Aquatic Resources. Constructed and compiled training and reference materials, processed benthic images using CoralNet software. Performed debris removal (primarily fishing line, weights, and nets) on a regular basis.
Worked at the DLNR DOFAW Kawai’ele Waterbird Sanctuary on Kauai. Kawai`ele is part of the Mānā Plain Wetland Restoration project, which aims to increase habitat for native wetland species and migratory shorebirds. Removed invasive plants (and animals) and collected, processed and dispersed native plant seeds. Out-planted native nursery plants from DLNR and National Tropical Botanical Gardens nursery. Performed waterbird and forest bird surveys, nest searches, and botulism surveys. Gained experience handling and banding native birds with nēnē geese and Laysan albatross. Facilitated community and school work days.
Assisted with the administration of the Great Lakes Bay Watershed Education Training Program (B-WET). Reviewed semi-annual progress reports and documented grantee accomplishments, tracked grantee expenditures and organized material for quarterly and biannual financial reporting. Revised the notice of federal funding opportunity for FY20. Served as a federal reviewer for the FY20 competition.
