The goal of the program is to prepare students to be freelance copyeditors and proofreaders ready to work for Random House and other publishers. In November 2021, I was accepted into the highly competitive Random House Mentor Program for Prospective Copy Editors and Proofreaders through Emerson College. In this program, I was assessed and mentored by Helen Macdonald, senior production editor for the WaterBrook and Multnomah imprints. Under her guidance, I refined the copyediting and proofreading skills I learned during my time at Emerson and uniquely applied them to the assessment of children’s picture books for visual consistency and continuity. Due to such thorough examination in my proofreading and an overall exceptional performance in this program, I was ultimately offered a position as a part-time freelancer for Penguin Random House. Watching the book production process unfold before my very eyes and being given the opportunity to work so intimately with words and meaningfully improve the text have affirmed to me why I want to pursue a career in the publishing industry.

A candidate needs at least 270 electoral votes to win the presidential election. Over the next few weeks, we’ll present 270 reasons why Harris and Walz need to get those electoral votes. We are not affiliated with the Harris/Walz campaign in any way, but we do believe that four more years of Trump will shred the fabric of this country and will irrevocably divide its people.
