Despite transitioning into a managerial role after accumulating over a decade of experience as an engineer, I've managed to maintain a strong connection to technical matters. My current position demands a blend of soft skills and technical expertise. I pride myself on effective communication, adeptly translating complex technical concepts for non-technical individuals, fostering synergy among team members through leadership, and maintaining organization to ensure timely delivery. Additionally, I possess strong strategic and tactical thinking abilities.
As head of infrastructure I am responsible for managing a global (EMEA, APAC, LATAM, US), multicultural and multidisciplinary team. Although I am acting very close to the technical teams, my focus is on business strategy and on how to implement that into day by day operations. Also, as budget owner, I have to participate on yearly exercise to prepare the next year budget and also to approve and closely monitor the expenses.
Through this assignment I had to manage a global and multicultural team, spread across the globe and lead them to accomplish both their operational tasks and business project assignments. The team was operating a wide environment starting from on-premise Infrastructure(including hardware management) to Cloud services(AWS). Mainly, we were providing platform(Virtualization, OS, docker, Kubernetes) and infrastructure services(NTP, DNS, LDAP, proxy, Backup&Recovery, monitoring etc.) support for the Internal customers.
Main objective here for me and my team is to provide the infrastructure for the applications to run and the tools for the development team to ease their tasks. I work daily with tools like Git(for code versioning control), GitLab(CICD), Puppet(configuration management), Docker(microservices), IBM Cloud(for both IaaS and SaaS). I do write code to automate tasks, mainly in bash but I had also some contact with Python and Php too.
My main task here is to provide L2 Infrastructure Support for the IBM clients. The team that I am part of is responsible with managing the various OS platforms (multiple Windows Server versions, multiple Linux distributions and ESXi hosts) in order to assure a stable and secure environment for the applications to run.
The Infrastructure team is in charge with the 24x7 monitoring and administrating the servers owned by one of the most important telecom provider in Italy. The production environment has over 800 machines on which there are a lot of operating systems. I have the opportunity to work with SunOS(from v5.8 to v5.10), HPUX, RedHat and Windows Server(from 2000 to 2008).
