Not long after joining the Environment Agency, I started volunteering to support the National Incident Room during major incidents (primarily flooding). Working in a fast-paced, high pressure environment, I produced national overview maps for internal and external situation reports during incidents using ESRI's ArcMap. The maps are an invaluable resource for showing the developing situation, are used in Cabinet Office Briefings (COBRA), and have been picked up by national newspapers including the Sunday Telegraph. During 'peacetime', I have assisted the National Incident Management team in developing data flow and visualisation, allowing the creation of mapping products to be quicker and easier during incidents.
Working in the Data Management team within the Evidence Directorate, my role primarily involved data transformation and supply. Using ETL tools including Informatica PowerCenter and FME to improve access to and usability of Environment Agency data within the organisation, I was also responsible for supplying data to external partners and customers. Having supported the ODX (Open Data Accelerator) project initiated by the Secretary of State, I am an advocate of 'working in the open', and will be supporting the ongoing work to embed open data to become business as usual within the organisation.
