During my week, I collaborated with a team of students to research and present a pitch about a nuclear reactor, convincing people why our chosen reactor (EPR) was the most viable option. We considered economical, environmental, safety and efficiency factors and then gave a presentation. This helped develop my teamwork and public speaking skills. I also had the opportunity to shadow a professional in the structural integrity team, gaining first-hand insight into the safety and engineering principles which ensure the reliability of nuclear infrastructure. A discussion about the safety of Sizewell C particularly as it considered the dangers of building nuclear reactors in close proximity which I found fascinating. Throughout the experience, we engaged in discussions with employees from a range of departments and learnt about the diverse career paths in the nuclear industry. I found it interesting how many roles are needed to maintain a nuclear reactor. This was expanded on as we were informed on the inner workings of reactors and just how complex they really are.
