Department of Experimental Oncology
Our main focus is to understand how Golgi- and centrosome-based microtubule arrays work in concert to ensure the formation of specialised microtubule arrays along the cell cycle and during cell differentiation and morphogenesis. In this context, I´m addressing mechanisms of mitotic spindle misorientation and mechanisms disturbing epithelial polarization, throgh CRISPR technology, as potential agents for tumor appearance, in polarized 2D epithelium or 3D organoids.
The objective of the group is to contribute to improving cancer treatment through preclinical research on in vitro and ex vivo models, biomarker studies for predicting responses and pharmacodynamics and clinical trials. The group is led by Dr. Joan Albanell, Director of the Medical Oncology Service at the Hospital del Mar. Almost 20% of women with breast cancer have a high amount of HER2 receptor in their tumors, which is associated with a greater aggressiveness of the disease and a worse prognosis. Although specific drugs have been designed to solve the alteration of this gene, the illness continues to be incurable in advanced stages, especially because breast cancer cells acquire resistance to these therapies. The objective of my work was to analyze, using classical techniques of molecular and cellular biology and high-throughput screenings, potential mechanisms of resistance to the current anti-HER2 clinical therapies in order to reverse that resistance and to personalize and improve the effectiveness of the treatment.
