I loved my work deeply and poured tremendous energy and time into it. That passion still lingers—I haven’t forgotten much of what I learned. But burnout changes you. After such an intense, life-altering experience, many people—whether wisely or not—step away completely and take a long break to heal. My own path was different: I chose to dive back in even harder. I seized every opportunity that came my way and, in the remaining twenty years of my career, built a successful freelance life. Now, in retirement, my priorities have shifted profoundly. After decades of intensity, I’ve come to treasure serenity and quiet above all else. These days are filled with learning music theory and playing the piano, reading novels and books by the dozen, exploring history and philosophy, staying active through sport, and—most importantly—simply remaining content, healthy, and alive.
