I completed 6 months with the building services consultancy in their Manchester office working on a number of projects and buildings at different stages of completion. I both learnt about and helped design systems for various services during my time there (water, heating, cooling, ventilation etc). A significant portion of my work related to the Manchester Business School Project and other building design projects. I also helped carry out a ground source heat pump feasibility study for multiple sites and a heat cost analysis of buildings for a local housing trust. During the placement, I gained experience in AutoCAD from working on and helping to create system drawings and I also developed an understanding of how the construction industry functions.
I was interviewed and invited to do a 12 week summer placement at Doosan Babcock in Renfrew after my first year of university. My project during the placement was to help the firm choose a new software as they were hoping to start using risk based inspections (RBI) when inspecting plants. In the relatively short time period I took the project from the early stages of contacting providers to setting up international video calls and finally recommending a provider during an end of placement presentation to the company managers. The task required me to gain an understanding of many safety standard documents and overall sense of how to work inside a business
I completed a week at the Engineering firm Heliex Power where I was given the chance to get involved around the company from the shop floor to the office. I helped put together their screw expanders which they pioneered as well as playing my part in the office by helping to do the inventory and order crates for transporting the company’s products.
